The Shannon Point Marine Center Campus

A paved pathway surrounded by landscaping leading to the Shannon Point Marine Center building.

SPMC is located in Anacortes, a town of approximately 15,000 residents located on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, Washington. Within the town of Anacortes are approximately 12 miles of marine shoreline, four freshwater lakes, and over 3000 acres of forestlands and parks. The Marine Center is located on a 78-acre campus covered by a mature Pacific lowland forest dominated by Douglas fir and cedar trees. The campus is a biological reserve that protects sizeable small mammal and bird populations, and includes a freshwater pond that expands the considerable diversity of wildlife present.

A rocky beach on the Salish Sea, with fog and mountains visible on the other side of the water.

The beach in front of the SPMC borders the Salish Sea, a name given in honor of the Coast Salish tribes and first nations that were the original inhabitants and stewards of the region. Approximately 1000 meters of cobble and bedrock shoreline supports a rich diversity of algae, invertebrates, and fish, as well as many protected bird and marine mammal species
